There are some people who just love conspiracies and mysteries and especially anything to do with “the end of the world” Remember all the brouhaha about the “millennium bug” that was going to destroy all our computers on January 1 in the year 2000? Sometimes I think there are people whose own lives are so miserable they dream of catastrophe and disaster as welcome diversions from the monotonous mundane lives they lead. 

All over the midwest, in states such as Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, part of the curriculum for intermediate grades involves teaching 3rd, 4th and 5th graders about the Native American tribes that lived in this part of the country before the Europeans arrived. There is nothing strange about this. All over the country it is standard for states to require children in this age range to learn the history of their own state. In the midwest states that is all wrapped up in the history and culture of the tribes that inhabited this area in the centuries before settlers began arriving from the eastern colonies of the early United States.

On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln passed away in a small room in the Peterson boarding house across the street from Ford’s Theatre in Washington where he had been shot the night before. This is fact.

OK, this is purely fatherly pride. This has nothing to do with school assemblies or science assembly programs, but only with a dad and a daughter and a father's pride. Mea culpa. It's my daughter. Guilty as charged!

Nature is a very cool thing! This was forwarded to me this morning and I thought I would share it.
Out in California in a Zoo a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. 
Sadly, due to difficulties in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and, being tiny, they died shortly after birth. But after recovering from the delivery, the mother cat suddenly began to decline in health. Physically she was fine, but the veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression.
The vets then embarked on a scientific experiment. They hypothesized that if given a new litter to nurse the mother might improve. To test the validity of this they began a search trying to locate a suitable litter. Unfortunately, tiger cubs are rare and there were none to be found. So the staff at the zoo determined to try something radical.
Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The doctors located a litter of newly born baby pigs, wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Quite a lot to ask of the piglets in the name of science. Brave little piggies! They might have become dinner, right?

Just a quick one today! We have written before about Rojo and what a great school assembly performer he is. Well, it seems like every time he visits a school we get another batch of letters in the mail from kids at that school that just loved his show!

We have written before about the importance of science in the education of our children in order for the United States to remain a world leader in the future. We have also referenced before the interest and enthusiasm of President Obama for encouraging an interest in science among our youth. Yesterday, the President took time off from a busy schedule in New York to pay a visit to a New York City science fair.
