Anti Bullying Assemblies for Middle and High Schools

Posted on Tue, Jul 29, 2014

bullying in middle schoolsThe start of school is right around the corner and everywhere school personnel and parents are scrambling to make plans for the new school year. The start of a new year is often seen as a time to set a solid behavioral tone for the year with some kind of plan to encourage strong character among students and also to combat bullying.

For years now, Mobile Ed has offered superb programs on anti bullying techniques and in the area of strong character development. And many, many schools fill up our schedules each year for these great school assemblies. However, the programs we offer, wonderful as they most certainly are, follow styles that are designed to speak to elementary aged kids. Sadly, the greatest need for such programs is elsewhere.

Any parent with kids in High School will well remember the headaches and heartaches associated with that time. Kids in middle school are in the midst of a massive change, not quite teenagers yet but no longer innocent children anymore either. Their bodies are growing like wildfire and their hormones are beginning to kick in and life is a mass of confused and often terrifying emotional challenges. To deal with all of this, kids generally find safety in cynicism and sarcasm and detachment. They adopt a herd mentality, refusing to admit to liking anything outside the scope of what the “group” has deemed acceptable. Anyone who steps outside the norm is singled out and ruthlessly demolished by the rest. Conformity is the rule, and weakness is attacked quite viciously. Amidst this chaos and mayhem, adults are viewed with disgust and disdain for the most part.

So how can adults work to address the problems inherent in this transitional phase, combat bullying and assist our kids in dealing with the important issues with which they are wrestling? We cannot do it alone. We need an ally, young enough to slip inside the wall of credibility, and capable of speaking the same language as our kids, while at the same time possessing the wisdom and skill of a trained adult counselor. For years, we at Mobile Ed have known this demand existed and for years we have sought just the right perfect individual to tackle this important job.
