What makes a person a good person? This question has puzzled philosophers since the earliest ages of mankind and continues to produce debate today. But there are certain virtues we commonly agree upon today and we also agree that teaching these virtues to our children is a good and desirable thing.
Churches and family units have traditionally been the centers where these traits have been explained and imparted to children. But more and more society has looked to schools to aid in this process.
One well liked program to help kids become “good” members of our society is found in the Inspector Iwannano program, which is now being used in many schools and school districts across the country. Inspector Iwannano defines good character as possessing several moral characteristics or “pillars of character”. Such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. All good characteristics, and a set of values I think just about everyone will agree are good for the individual and good for society.
Many schools like to use some kind of school assembly to kick off the year and get kids started on a character building path from the very start of the year. This way, teachers have a reference point to refer back to when making assertions about character issues throughout the year.

This year we have three performers carrying this great elementary school show and they are in three different parts of the country. School years start at different times depending upon the state in question. Here in the Midwest, schools in Indiana and Kentucky and parts of southern Illinois start in August so we have two tours starting in this part of the country during August. One of those tours then travels out to the East Coast for September, while the other moves into Ohio and Michigan at that time. Meantime, Barry Cutler now offers this great elementary school show in California so we can kick off the year for West Coast schools whenever they are ready!
